‘Cobra Kai’ Says Goodbye.. with Season 6 Part 3

By Peter Veunnasack

On the eve of the series conclusion, fans from all around the world are taking to social media to express their love for the show, saying their farewells to the cast and crew and reminiscing with the rest of the fandom by sharing pictures and footages.

I’ve been covering the series since May of 2018 when it first aired on YouTube Red. In one of Jon Hurwitz’s Q&As on what was then Twitter, he had mentioned that they had an outline for six seasons. When the show moved to Netflix in 2020, fans were concerned if the show would end on it’s own terms. It did and with an additional 5 episodes!

“..there’s a resolve at the end of 6- at the end of the third drop.. that’s a great ending. For everybody.” William Zabka told Variety.

With a show with 10 episodes a season, runtimes ranging from 23 minutes to 48 minutes, and a cast as large as Game of Thrones (not even), it seems challenging to give every character their proper ending. IMO, these final episodes had some of the best writing, some of the best acting, and some of the most emotional sequences of the entire series. Yes it “sticks to its landing”. You get a sense of every character’s trajectory following the finale. Will there be some criticisms? Sure. Every fan has their own Stan(s), and their own heroes, good or bad.

Fans can expect epic action and fight sequences, appearances from some familiar faces and some new ones, things that payoff from previous seasons, and some great needle drops!

Season 6 Part 3 of Cobra Kai feels like if the creators were given a chance to make a movie. A third sequel to the Daniel LaRusso saga that’s a good bookend to everything that’s come before it.

“..we need to go back to where it all began.” -Daniel

The final episodes will release February 13th on Netflix.

The Surprise Return of Miyagi

By Mike P. aka Cobra Kai Wisdom

When “Cobra Kai” first premiered in 2018, many veteran Karate Kid fans questioned how the Miyagiverse could continue without Mr. Miyagi. Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg have done a miraculous job with keeping Miyagi’s spirit alive throughout the series. But as the seasons progressed, the idea of Mr. Miyagi returning in physical form—as a young man in a flashbacksequence—became a constant wish in the fandom. In Part 2 of Season 6, that wish finally became a reality, but not in the way that anyone could have ever imagined. In what can only be described as both a cinematic masterpiece and nightmare, Mr. Miyagi finally returned to fight……Daniel. Could Mr. Miyagi actually instill fear in his best friend?

This impossible task fell to an actor named Brian Takahashi. Learn how Brian accomplished this feat, and all about his impressive career, in his interview with Peter Veunnasack at Cobra Kai Kompanion.

The Unmasking of Eli Moskowitz

By Dorian Tisato

Since his debut, Eli is one of the most compelling and multilayered characters in the Miyagiverse. From a timid nerd to a ruthless fighter to an honourable martial artist, Eli has worn many masks in the past five seasons of Cobra Kai. We’ve seen the best and worst of his character that have us either loving him or fearing him.

There has been a lot of debate as to whether there are two versions of Eli Moskowitz. There is Eli and there is Hawk. Eli is gentle, Hawk is ruthless. Eli is compassionate, Hawk is apathetic. Eli defends his friends, Hawk uses them as a human shield.

According to actor Jacob Bertrand, said in an interview with Cobra Kai Kompanion, he hinted that there is a difference between the two, especially in Season 3 with the return of Kyler (Joe Seo) and Brucks (Bo Mitchell).

“I knew it was going to be a really interesting scene, seeing how Hawk would react in seeing them again.

“He’s had a lot of success being Hawk and has moved on from being Eli”.

It is important to note that the way he refers to Hawk is almost like a mask he wears, as opposed to being a dual personality. This is relevant to who Eli is and his identity as a person.

You’ll recall during his second lesson in the Cobra Kai dojo, Johnny asks Eli  – in his ‘Johnny Classic’ way – if he is one of those ‘challenged’ kids. To which Eli responds, “the doctor says I could be on the spectrum”. While Johnny doesn’t quite understand what that means, the viewers certainly did.

This comment alone heavily implies that Eli could be autistic or perhaps another identity related to other Neurodivergents. What is a Neurdodivergent? Well, a Neurodivergent is a person that has a neurological difference in the way they interact with people.

But what else makes Eli a Neurodivergent? Well, even when he is introduced, his best friend Demetri says he is a man of few words. Implying that he doesn’t have typical social skills that non-autistic people commonly express.

Okay, so we’ve stated the obvious, but the deeper reason that Eli could be autistic is the way he masks who he is. We’ve met the real Eli in Strike First, but over time, that Eli disappeared. And Hawk was born. This is called masking.

Research has shown that masking is very common amongst people that are autistic, and it is clear that Eli masks who he really is by wearing the mask of Hawk.

As Jacob said above, “he’s had a lot of success being Hawk”. But at what cost? Once Eli wore his mask, he didn’t want to take it off, and this is where the side effects set in.

Post-All Valley, Eli warned Demetri to ‘cool it with the nerd shit’ when he mentioned their time at computer camp. This foreshadowed the further descent from his true identity to his alter ego. Look at it this way: Eli is Bruce Wayne, but instead of becoming Batman, he becomes Bane.

Masking who he really is has cost Eli a lot, especially in seasons two and three. For example, he forgot who his friends were, especially Demetri and Miguel. After threatening Demetri with the ‘snitches get stitches’ line, this was the change we all saw coming with Hawk now going from a blue to red mohawk, even Demetri referencing this as his ‘Red Hulk’ phase.

From then on, the mask only came off for ten seconds at Moon’s party with Demetri mentioning the new Doctor Who, and Eli re-emerged for a split second in absolute glee. But once he saw Moon kissing Piper, the mask went back on.

By season 3, the masking was extreme, especially during the laser skirmish brawl. Eli went so far to ‘fit in’ as the Cobra Kai leader that he broke Demetri’s arm. Even though you could feel the guilt that Eli showed, Hawk didn’t let anyone see it.

Why go so far just to fit in? Well, with the new recruits entering Cobra Kai, it shows that Eli is a survivalist, and to him, being Hawk is necessary. This is evident when Kyler and Brucks – his former bullies – join Cobra Kai. While it was a risky move, Eli pulverised Brucks in front of Kyler to prove a point. While Eli made his point, fellow Cobra Kai student Tory was horrified by what she just saw, despite her ruthless nature. This began to have an effect on everyone around him.

However, during the LaRusso home brawl, a light had been switched on in Eli’s brain, especially when Kyler pretends to be his friend for attacking Miguel. It was at this moment that the mask began to slip off. Everyone’s voices were in Eli’s head: Johnny (reminding him who he is), Miguel (telling him he is brainwashed), Kreese (commanding him to take in his lessons), all speaking to him at once.

While it is dramatised, this is what is known as autistic burnout: all of his bottled emotions hitting him at once, and in that shining moment with Demetri in an arm lock, Eli had returned and switched sides. While it was a major turning point, this was only the beginning.

Upon joining Miyagi-Fang, Eli needed to adjust to life without his mask, and the consequences of his actions. Apart from Demetri, he needed to earn everyone’s trust back, prove that he wasn’t the same person as before, and avoid falling into old habits.

While there was a small re-emergence of Hawk when he met Kenny, Eli didn’t attack the young Cobra Kai recruit for any reason other than he was Cobra Kai.

A major change leading up to the introduction of Terry Silver to Miyagi-Fang was the retribution from Cobra Kai for the water hose prank: they shaved off Eli’s new purple mohawk. Devastated from his loss of identity, Eli gave up on karate all-together and became isolated from everyone including Demetri. This is very common for any autistic (or Neurodivergent) person that decides to unmask, as they now need to find out who they are and allow themselves to be free of any future masking.

While he was accepted into Miyagi Do, Eli was still trying to find himself, even at the tournament. Moon showed that she accepted him for who he is, not the colour of his hair. From then on, Eli allowed himself to embrace the good and the bad sides of himself, and to fight for what’s right. While he was crowned the champion, this was another obstacle he would need to face.

By the time the tournament wrapped, Eli was on top of the world: him and Moon were back together, he had his friends, and most importantly, no masking. But there is a new Cobra in town: Kenny. Last time the two of them came to blows, Kenny was timid and fearful, now he is ruthless and feared, not dissimilar from who Eli used to be.

Despite his status as a champion, Eli was not a threat in Kenny’s eyes. This is a lesson that Eli was going to have to learn the hard way: just because you win, doesn’t mean you won’t lose. During the Sekai Taikai trials, Eli took it easy on Kenny, per Robby’s request. Feeling he will lose, Eli decided to mask once more as Hawk, and it backfired badly with an unfocused Eli losing to Kenny badly with an unethical strike to his diaphragm.

This was a small setback for the one-time champion who is now being called ‘Faux-Hawk’. Despite the cruel nickname, Eli remained optimistic and didn’t allow the loss to affect him too much.

This was evident during the final battle at the Cobra Kai main dojo when he and Demetri were once again confronted by Kyler and his crew. While he could have put his mask back on, Eli has learned from his mistakes and stands tall against his former bully, not even letting the ‘Faux-Hawk’ taunt affect him.

Like a lot of the characters in the show, Eli has had to overcome a lot of obstacles in the show. And we still have one more season to go…

Blue Beetle (2023) Trailer Review and Breakdown

By Jose Bermudez

The first trailer for Blue Beetle, the newest entry in the DC Cinematic Universe, has dropped and delivers on all the fun, chaos and excitement I would expect from a character not living in the dark, “blue filtered” world of previous films from that universe.

The Blue Beetle is the story of Jaime Reyes, a young Mexican American boy from Palmera City (originally El Paso) who is transformed into a battle armor clad superhero via a mystical/technological Blue Scarab artifact that attaches itself to his spine.

As the trailer begins, we see Jaime surveying the ocean from a beach resort deck looking like an important man contemplating the world. He is quickly brought back to reality by his sister Milagros, who reminds them they’re there for their menial jobs as resort housekeepers. Jaime is a dreamer with doubts of ever succeeding, but as Milagros reminds him in her mocking and loving way: “You always land on your feet, bro. You’re Jaime”.  Cut to an embarrassed Jaime who shows up to a job interview, at Kord Industries, with his family in tow chanting his name.

Jaime! Jaime! Jaime!

Later, at Kord Industries, Jaime looks toward a descending elevator with a young lady he knows as Jenny riding down. She exits the elevator with a package in both hands, distressed as alarms go off and building security is running along an upper floor.

What’s in the box?

In the middle of all the pandemonium, Jenny hands Jaime a box and tells him to guard it with his life but not open it.  He brings the box home and it’s a BIG BELLY BURGER! This is clearly the first sign we’re in the same DC universe as the other heroes: Batman, The Flash, Superman, etc. Seeing that John Byrne caricature on the box always makes me smile.

You went in to get us jobs, but all you brought back was a hamburger?

The box is opened and, instead of a hamburger, a blue trinket in the shape of a beetle is inside.  Jaime is wowed as the scarab begins to walk on his hand and he finds himself amused as he thinks it is showing he likes him.

I think it likes me.

But the fascination and wonder over this charming little scarab turns quickly into a little horror show as it goes all Ridley Scott on Jaime and makes like a ”facehugger” from Alien clamping down on Jaime’s face. Uncle Rudy, played by George Lopez, tries to fight it off of Jaime but is soon zapped by an electrical charge that releases energy all around the neighborhood. Then it attaches itself to Jaime’s spine where it makes a series of transformations that are reminiscent of everything from TheExorcist, Venom and even Iron Man. At the end of the transformation, it becomes a self-contained suit of alien metal armor which rockets Jaime through the roof and out into space.

Oh! I’m in space.

Panicky at first, Reyes finds a quiet calmness as he is in the mesosphere and takes in the fact he is out in space. The calmness is, however, short lived as the suit announces its descent with re-entry systems ready and it starts a rapid dive towards earth. It stops within inches of crashing into the ocean as gossamer wings flutter out and he hovers over the surface like a hummingbird.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a beetle.

One brief logo teaser later and Jenny is shown leading the Reyes family through sliding doors in what appears to be a Kord Industries lab. She begins to explain the nature of the scarab and the suit as alien technology used to destroy worlds and protect its host. The scarab will protect but mostly acts on its own independent of its host

Jenny leads the way

The next clip shows how it protects its host by creating a cocoon like force shield with a razor front as a bus comes toward Jaime on the street.

I think I cut a bus in half.

The next group of clips show what appears to be an entire array of mini scarabs followed by a clip of Vicki Kord, played by Susan Sarandon, explaining to Jaime that the scarab chose him, but it still belongs to her.

The scarab chose you, but it belongs to me

And in a fashion befitting an evil industrialist with all the power money can buy, we see her try to regain the scarab as her minions tear through the Reyes household. And we are introduced to the suit’s first real menace in the form of Carapax , played by Raoul Max Trujillo. Carapax concern trolls Jaime by proclaiming that his biggest weakness is his love for family.

The love you feel for your family makes you weak!

Jaime is clearly in beast mode with his family in danger and tears through baddies while they are hiding out in what may be Ted Kord’s laboratory. Ted Kord was the non-scarabed Blue Beetle before Jaime and is/was Vicki Kord’s brother. His family shows that they’re no slouches as we see Uncle Rudy firing up Ted Kord’s ”Bug” as if he were taking his carrucha out for a Sunday drive on the boulevard.

Fighting for family

Love for a family that is not weak is not a weakness. I mean checkout out Nana’s
big gat!

There is a reason this will remind you of The Watchmen. Long story.

At the end of a fairly busy action montage we get one of the only welcomed cliches in comic books and comic book movies: The “Uncle Ben” validation. Just as Uncle Ben told Peter Parker about great power and responsibility, Uncle Rudy says to young Jaime: “The universe has sent you a gift, and you have to figure out what you’re going to do with it”.

After all that we finally get Jaime learning the scope of the suit’s powers as it explains how much he can do with the power of his own imagination. This is how we find out Jaime has some crazy love for Final Fantasy VII as he conjures up a sick Buster Sword.

We cut to one more logo screen

And then we get a trailer’s equivalent of an end credit scene with  Jaime’s family/Team Blue Beetle sifting through all the tech and gadgets from Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle days.

On the left, in the background, we see the original golden age Blue Beetle costume worn by Dan Garret.
On the right is the Ted Kord costume. It’s a perfect comic book match.

It ends with Uncle Rudy giving the funniest line in the trailer: ”Batman is a fascist!”

This trailer surprised me in a very good way.  The casting couldn’t have been more perfect. They actually cast actors from Mexico to play Jaime’s parents and Nana. The Spanish will be spoken with the correct Mexican accents and none of that awkward ”Spanglish” that is used more for flavor than any attempt to get the culture correct.

The tone is spot on. Keith Giffen, who created Jaime Reyes, always wrote with a consciousness that made room for humor and it’s very evident in this trailer that the writers were keeping that same vibe.

One of my favorite new elements is the strength of a family that knows the secrets and how they are a cohesive and supporting unit. Jaime doesn’t have to be a lonely unreluctant hero. He has a family team.

Saving the best for last. Xolo Maridueña shows us why he was pursued for this role. His natural charisma, acting and ability to do action was never in doubt. I have been this guy’s biggest fan since the first episode of Cobra Kai.  To say I’m proud of Xolo and how he represents the latino community would be an understatement. I’ll be first in line to see this in August.

Cobra Kai creator teases when S6 will begin.

By Peter Veunnasack

Contains spoilers for Cobra Kai Seasons 2-5.

Late Monday night Jon Hurwitz quote tweeted Twitter user @bryanedwardhill and had this to say:

“Similarly, S6 of Cobra Kai begins roughly a year after our S2 finale. Time moves slowly in the Miyagiverse. #CobraKai #KarateKid”

Twitter

Let me remind you some of the things that happened in the S2 finale “No Mercy”.

  • (Aug/Sep 2018) Daniel finds Robby and Sam at Johnny’s apartment and Daniel briefly squares off with his high school frenemy before being stopped by their respective offspring.
  • The teenagers return to school after a cruel summer and a karate war ensues in the halls of West Valley High School.
  • Sensei Kreese takes over Cobra Kai.
  • Johnny abandons his Dodge Challenger and throws away his phone as he’s getting a friend request from Ali Mills Schwarber over Kari Kimmel’s haunting rendition of Bananarama’s Cruel Summer.

That was all in the finale. Since then, Daniel has gone to Okinawa, setting up his relationship with Chozen, who ultimately comes to the United States to help his friend take down Silver’s Cobra Kai.

Jon mentions “time moves slowly in the Miyagiverse”. Limited to 10 episodes a season, the writers understand the plot points they need to cover in order to tell the narrative of their story. And because of that, some things have to move fast. Miguel’s recovery, many of the students’ advancements in karate skills just to name a couple. Devon Lee was introduced in S4 and by the finale of S5 she had already enrolled into 3 different karate dojos made it to black belt.

Could we see a bit of a time jump at the beginning of S6? Jon’s “roughly a year after our S2 finale.” would put us in the fall of 2019. Most of the teenagers are entering their senior year so could we skip pass the first days of school? What about Terry Silver being incarcerated and John Kreese escaping prison after assaulting law enforcement and a doctor? I’m confident these questions are being brought up in the writers room, which has been opened since early February.

“BIGGEST SEASON OF COBRA KAI YET”? Many in the fandom speculate that “biggest” means either a longer runtime on the season or possibly more episodes! The writers use their words carefully when crafting out a script. They can fill many gaps using dialogue without having to show us everything. So many questions with one final season to answer them.

Tell me if you’ve interpreted Jon Hurwitz’s tweet differently below.

Ralph Macchio recently mentioned at the ATL Comic Con that they could start filming in May. We learned from writer/producer Michael Jonathan Smith that in the previous season, they were able to start filming with two scripts ready as they were polishing the rest of the episodes.
