SCHOOL SPIRITS EPISODES 5&6: DINNER DISASTER & ADJUSTING TO LIFE IN ANOTHER BODY THAT ISN’T REALLY YOURS

By Sara Ashton

Last week’s episode saw Janet, in Maddie’s body adjusting to her deceitful life. Her friends came around for dinner and honestly it was an interesting dynamic to see portrayed on screen.

Peyton List continues to do a great job at portraying herself as Janet occupying Maddie’s body.

Each week sees the season delve deeper into scars and memories of the past. Janet’s past is looked into further and Maddie manages to physically step into the scar of Janet’s.

The episode comes to its climactic conclusion when we see someone pulling a bag over Janet’s head. Initially, believed it to be Mr Martin occupying Mr Anderson’s body, but however it was Maddie’s  friends who will clearly do anything to get her back.

Episode 6 brought the story back to its core, as we also focused on the other ghosts in the show. Wally had another high school reunion, Charley learned some things that helped him open up to Yuri — there were particularly great moments from Milo Manheim and Nick Pugliese who play Wally and Charley. They had great emotional moments and they will truly stick with me as a fan of the show.

Maddie’s friends took Janet to a cabin, trying to help her, they try to reason with Janet. But seemingly are not getting anywhere.

Peyton List always manages to do such a magnificent job. One moment we will see Janet, then we will be back in Split River High where Maddie is— and everything down to the physicality is different.

Back to Maddie in the school, there are moments where she ventures through the scars of the other ghosts in wordless moments, where you can hear nothing but Maddie’s breath and it is a very tense moment when this happens on screen.

A pivotal moment of this season occurs where Maddie’s mother, Sandra believes she has gone missing again so she reverts to drinking again. This is a very important moment and it is heart wrenching when the audience realises Maddie witnesses her falling off of the wagon once again.

Janet is seemingly prepared to let go of her body after having a talk with Simon, but at the last moment Mr Martin, adorning Mr Anderson’s body unwillingly appears.

The dynamic between Nicole and Xavier is something I hope will continue to be explored. I am sensing there just might possibly be more than just on the surface with those two.
