SCHOOL SPIRITS EPISODE 4: ‘A WALK-IN TO REMEMBER’ REVIEW

By Sara Ashton

With scars reopening, school rules enforced and tension galore. This episode had everything and more you could want from a School Spirits episode.

The entire cast did stand out jobs in this episode in particular, and it is definitely my favourite so far.

Peyton List continues to wow in her two separate roles. Sure you can differentiate between Maddie and Janet onscreen, but the physicality and the way in which Peyton carries herself is to be admired. You can easily tell the difference between the characters, and Peyton is applauded for this.

Rainbow Wedell (Claire) and Milo Manheim (Wally) also delivered standout emotional performances in this episode. Seeing more depth and grit to these characters is so rewarding to see, and noticing how these characters are being fleshed out and developed is great to watch as a viewer.

Nick Pugliese also gave a memorable performance as Charley in this episode: seeing these ghosts reliving what haunts them the most was no easy feat. But they handled it with as much dignity as you’d expect, but the courage was definitely there.

Standout moments of this episode was seeing ‘Maddie’ back at home with her mom, sure — as mentioned above Peyton List did a great job at showing you it was actually Janet in her body, but her mom doesn’t know that. The scenes were written in such a way to cause tension and release the awkwardness that her mom perhaps couldn’t perceive.

And with the cliffhanger of the episode, we wish it was next week already. There are so many questions going through our heads right now…

Will they take Janet back to the school? Will they ever find out what happened to Mr Martin? Has he inhabited the body of Mr Anderson?

In true School Spirits fashion there are so many questions to be answered. Watch the show on Paramount+

‘Cobra Kai’ Says Goodbye.. with Season 6 Part 3

By Peter Veunnasack

On the eve of the series conclusion, fans from all around the world are taking to social media to express their love for the show, saying their farewells to the cast and crew and reminiscing with the rest of the fandom by sharing pictures and footages.

I’ve been covering the series since May of 2018 when it first aired on YouTube Red. In one of Jon Hurwitz’s Q&As on what was then Twitter, he had mentioned that they had an outline for six seasons. When the show moved to Netflix in 2020, fans were concerned if the show would end on it’s own terms. It did and with an additional 5 episodes!

“..there’s a resolve at the end of 6- at the end of the third drop.. that’s a great ending. For everybody.” William Zabka told Variety.

With a show with 10 episodes a season, runtimes ranging from 23 minutes to 48 minutes, and a cast as large as Game of Thrones (not even), it seems challenging to give every character their proper ending. IMO, these final episodes had some of the best writing, some of the best acting, and some of the most emotional sequences of the entire series. Yes it “sticks to its landing”. You get a sense of every character’s trajectory following the finale. Will there be some criticisms? Sure. Every fan has their own Stan(s), and their own heroes, good or bad.

Fans can expect epic action and fight sequences, appearances from some familiar faces and some new ones, things that payoff from previous seasons, and some great needle drops!

Season 6 Part 3 of Cobra Kai feels like if the creators were given a chance to make a movie. A third sequel to the Daniel LaRusso saga that’s a good bookend to everything that’s come before it.

“..we need to go back to where it all began.” -Daniel

The final episodes will release February 13th on Netflix.

SCHOOL SPIRITS EPISODES 1-3 RECAP: body swapping, arsonists & teenage drama: the truth is slowly uncovered

By Sara Ashton

This article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of season 2.

The first three episodes of the second season of school spirits are a welcome home, like the first season we are brought back to the characters we know and love, whilst being introduced to new faces.

As usual, Mr Martin is appearing as his shady self. Simon has convinced himself he’s going mad, and this is particularly hard to see especially knowing just how close he and Maddie are. There are great moments in these first episodes between Peyton List and Kristian Ventura, their onscreen chemistry is ever strong.

We see Xavier in hospital, Claire and Nicole had many scenes together in these first batch of episodes and they play off each other extremely well.

Despite the dire situation Maddie finds herself in, the writing leaves room for rather humorous moments with lines such as “who knew stalking someone could be so dull?”

In these episodes we are introduced to Janet in more depth. Her backstory appears to be a complicated one, and as her mystery begins to unravel it is rather difficult to decide whether you want to feel sorry for her or not. In some aspects yes, but that final scene in episode three? It is hard to feel sorry for someone who is appearing to be body snatching. Jess Gabor does an outstanding job playing the unstable, dangerous character who might just snap at any given moment.

The onscreen chemistry (pun intended) with Mr Martin (Josh Zuckerman) is one to be admired. There is evidently something twisted about this dynamic, and these actors play it very well.

We cannot write a School Spirits article without mentioning our beloved ghosts. Wally is being his usual self, but also feeling very insecure. He is clearly having a hard time. Charley wants to know what is happening and Rhonda has a lot of her own trauma to unpack.

New ghosts on the scene add new, yet familiar vibes to the show. Yuri and Quinn are welcomed additions to the show. For as much as there is drama, there is also humour twinged throughout to keep it from being very heavy.

One thing I enjoyed a lot about these first batch of episodes was Xavier’s journey so far. He has come a long way since a hospital bed, he is learning new things and this is definitely an eye opening experience for him. As a viewer it is very interesting to see how this plays out. He is clearly having his own regrets, as is Claire. She has guilt for different reasons. Nicole is on the edge of a wire, not knowing what to believe. Of course, everyone is hoping for the best outcome. Ultimately, everyone just wants Maddie back.

Considering we know what happened to Maddie’s body, the mystery is still very much there. These first episodes have been packed with much more storytelling and it is becoming increasingly evident this is more than just some teen drama. It also shows how it handles the unknown in a way that is thrilling.

The first three episodes of School Spirits are now streaming on Paramount+
